Iglesia de Santa Maria / la iglesia de Santa Maria (Alarcon / España) / / La iglesia de Santa Maria, ubicada en la calle de Dr. Tortosa, es del siglo XVI, de estilo renacentista con fuerte inspiracion plateresca y añadidos posteriores. En su construccion intervino Esteban Jamet de Orleans, a quien se atribuye el famoso "arco de Jamete" de la catedral de Cuenca. El interior tiene varias capillas barrocas, el coro que se atribuye a Martin de Aldehuela, una pila bautismal renacentista y sobre ella un templete barroco policromado. El retablo esta fechado en 1574, de estilo plateresco al igual que el abside y la portada principal.
Church of Santa Maria / the church of Santa Maria (Alarcon / Spain) / / The church of Santa Maria, located in Dr. Tortosa street, is from the XVI century, of Renaissance style and strong plateresque inspiration. In its building participated Esteban Jamet de Orleans, to whom it's attributed the famous "arch of Jamete" of the cathedral of Cuenca. Inside there are several baroque chapels, the chorus that is attributed to Martin de Aldehuela, a renaissance font and above it a baroque polychromatic pavilion. The altarpiece is dated in 1574, of plateresque style, the same than the apse and the main front.

La villa de Alarcon / la villa de Alarcon (Cuenca / Spain) / / El nombre de este hermoso pueblo puede venir de "ciudad de Alarico" cuando vue visigoda, desconociendose el nombre anterior bajo la dominacion romana. Los arabes la convirtieron en fortaleza amurallada y Alfonso VIII la conquista para hacerla depender del reino de Toledo. Alfonso X le concede el fuero de Cuenca y desde entonces queda unida a esta ciudad. El el siglo XII pasa a depender de la Orden de Santiago hasta que se convierte en la sede del marquesado de Villena. El Infante Don Juan Manuel (1284-1348) fue durante largo tiempo señor del castillo, donde escribio gran parte de su obra literaria.
The village of Alarcon / the village of Alarcon (Cuenca / Spain) / / The name of this beautiful village could come from "city of Alarico" when it was visigoth. Its former roman name is unknown. Arabs converted it in walled fortress and Alfonso VIII conquered it to make it depend of the kingdom of Toledo. Alfonso X changes it to the jurisdiction of Cuenca and since then it stays linked to this city. In the XII century it passes to depend on the Order of Santiago until it becomes the see of the marquis of Villena. The Infante Don Juan Manuel (1284-1348) was the lord of the castle for a long time, where he wrote a lot of his literary pieces.

La plaza del Infante don Juan Manuel / la plaza del Infante don Juan Manuel (Alarcon / Spain) / / La plaza del Infante Don Juan Manuel, situada al extremo opuesto al castillo, en la parte mas alta del monte, tiene la tipica distribucion de las poblaciones del medievo: es abierta y empedrada y en ella se alzan varios edificios de gran interes: El ayuntamiento, que es una construccion de dos plantas del siglo XVI; la iglesia de San Juan Bautista, realizada en este mismo siglo XVI sobre otra anterior de estilo romanico, de una nave con boveda de cañon y contrafuertes interiores. La fachada presenta una portada herreriana y se corona con una espadaña del siglo XVII. Al primitivo edificio estuvo adosado el posito, hoy desaparecido.
The square of the Infante don Juan Manuel / the square of the Infante don Juan Manuel (Alarcon / Spain) / / The square of the Infante Don Juan Manuel, located at the oposite side of the castle, in the highest place of the mountain, has the typical distribution of the medieval villages: it's open and paved and around there are builidings of great interest: The town hall, that is a two-floor construction of the XVI century; the church of San Juan Bautista, made in that same XVI century over a former romanesque church, with a barret vault nave and interior buttresses. The main front is of "herreriano" style and there is bell gable of the XVII century on top.

La fortaleza fue reformada por el Infante Don Juan Manuel y los marqueses de Villena. Hoy es uno de los castillos españoles mejor conservados en el que destaca su torre del Homenaje de estilo renacentista, convertido en un comodo Parador de Turismo dando la sensacion de que unicamente ha sido amueblado.
The castle of Alarcon / the castle of Alarcon (Cuenca / Spain) / / The castle of Alarcon was build by Alfonso VIII, according to the chronicle of Alfonso X el Sabio, possibly over another arab building. The fortress was altered by the Infante Don Juan Manuel and the marquis of Villena. Nowadays it's one of the better preserved spanish castles, from which its renaissance tower stands out. Now it has become a comfortable Hotel (Parador de Turismo).

La Ciudad Encantada / la Ciudad Encantada (Cuenca/España) / / La Ciudad Encantada se halla a 1417 m. de altitud, enclavada en la meseta de la Muela de Valdecabras a 26 km de Cuenca. Comprende un espacio de 20 km cuadrados que ofrecen un espectaculo de rocas con las formas mas variadas. El recorrido comprende unos 3 km.

Las casas colgadas / las casas colgadas (Cuenca/España) / / Estas casas son las mas famosas de Cuenca pero en realidad son un mito moderno y una paradoja. Porque si bien su origen es de los siglos XIII y XVI, las sucesivas restauraciones y transformaciones modernas son las que han dado el actual aspecto, que siendo muy pintoresco, no es sin embargo tipico conquense en cuanto a su arquitectura de balconajes y volados de madera. Estas casas reciben los nombres de Casa de la Sirena, ocupada por el meson, y Casa del Rey en la que se instala el Museo de Arte Abstracto. En la primera se sabe que vivio a comienzos del siglo XVI un noble llamado Juan de Guzman, y el al segunda el canonigo Gonzalo Gonzalez de Cañamares.
The hanging houses / the 'casas colgadas' (hanging houses) (Cuenca/Spain) / / These houses are the most famous of Cuenca but in fact they are a modern myth and a paradox. Although they are from the XIII and XVI centuries, the way they look like now is due to later improvements and modern changes, that make them very picturesque but not typical of Cuenca, as far as the architecture of the wooden balconies is concerned. These houses are named 'Casa de la Sirena', holding the meson, and 'Casa del Rey' in which the Museum of Abstract Art is located. In the first of them lived a nobleman called Juan de Guzman, in the first part of the XVI century, and in the second lived the canon Gonzalo Gonzalez de Cañamares.

Las casas colgadas y el puente de hierro / las casas colgadas y el puente de hierro sobre el Huecar (Cuenca/España) / el convento de San Pablo / Desde el convento de San Pablo (Actualmente Parador de Turismo) se puede observar esta bella estampa de las casas colgadas y el puente de hierro o de San Pablo sobre el rio Huecar, que es en realidad una pasarela construida en 1902 en lugar del antiguo puente sobre pilares que sirve hoy para sostener la estructura de la pasarela. Aquel puente se derrumbo en dos ocasiones: en 1786 y en 1895.
The hanging houses and the iron bridge / the 'casas colgadas' (hanging houses) and the iron bridge over the river Huecar (Cuenca/Spain) / the convent of San Pablo / From the convent of San Pablo (currently a hotel "Parador de Turismo") you can watch this nice view of the hanging houses and the iron bridge (also known as bridge of San Pablo) over the river Huecar, that in fact it's a runway build in 1902 over the stilts of the old bridge, that collapsed twice: in 1786 and in 1895.

El convento de San Pablo / el convento de San Pablo (Cuenca/España) / las casas colgadas / El convento de San Pablo, convertido hoy en Parador de Turismo, fue fundado en 1523 por los Dominicos y de su estado primitivo queda la iglesia de planta de cruz latina con una cubierta de traceria gotica. La portada es lo mas interesante de la obra: de estilo barroco churrigueresco, fue levantada en el siglo XVIII con dos grandes columnas jonicas enmarcando la puerta y en el cuerpo alto, entre dos jarrones, el escudo de la inquisicion. En su interior hay una capilla dedicada a la Virgen del Rosario debida a Martin de Aldehuela que la construyo en el siglo XVIII.
The convent of San Pablo / the convent of San Pablo (Cuenca/Spain) / the hanging houses / The convent of San Pablo, now a hotel (Parador de Turismo), was founded in 1523 by the Dominicans and from its primitive state remains the church of latin cross plant with a gothic cover. The most outstanding is the main front: of churrigueresque baroque style, it was build in the XVIII century, with two large ionic columns framing the door, and above between two vases the escutcheon of the Inquisition. Inside there is a chapel devoted to Virgen del Rosario, work of Martin de Aldehuela that built it in the XVIII century.

Interior de la catedral de Cuenca / el interior de la catedral de Cuenca (España) / / Desde la entrada hasta el crucero tiene tres naves y a partir de este cinco que terminaban en en otros tantos absides que sucumbieron al hacerse la doble girola. La vista choca con el coro en el centro, lo que da al templo el caracter español preciso pues es esta ubicacion una originalidad del gotico español.
Inside the cathedral of Cuenca / inside the cathedral of Cuenca (Spain) / / From the entrance up to the transept there are three naves and from there another five that ended en the same number apses that were removed when making the double ambulatory. A curiosity is the chorus located in the middle, a peculiar feature of the spanish gothic.

La catedral de Cuenca / La catedral de Cuenca (España) / / La historia es este templo es casi un reflejo de la propia historia monumental de la ciudad transcurrida bajo designios de mala suerte: destrucciones, expolios y abandono. Hasta mediados del siglo XIII tuvo una fachada provisonal; Fernando III hizo levantar parte de la fachada principal y dos torres gemelas en estilo gotico que desaparecieron con otras dos torres (llego a tener cuatro) por la accion del fuego a consecuencia de la caida de rayos. En 1720 se levanto otra fachada pero tuvo que ser desmontada por los sucesivos desplomes construyendose otra vez en 1723. En 1902 se derrumbo la torre de Giraldo y gran parte del templo por lo que tuvo que construirse nuevamente la fachada en 1910, siendo la actual.
The cathedral of Cuenca / The cathedral of Cuenca (Spain) / / The history of this temple reflects the unlucky monumental history of this city: destructions, spoils and abandons. Till mid XIII century it had a provisional front; Fernando III made build part of the main front and two twin towers in gothic style that were destroyed together with another two towers (it got to have four) by the fire because of thunderbolts. In 1720 a new main front was build but it had to be unmounted because of several collapses and it was rebuild in 1723. In 1902 the tower of Giraldo and large part of the temple collapsed and the main front had to be build again in 1910, resulting in the present one.

La hoz del Jucar / la hoz del Jucar (Cuenca/España) / la parte alta de la ciudad de Cuenca / La ciudad de Cuenca se halla en un promontorio rodeado por las hoces el rio Jucar y del rio Huecar.

Moya was along the Middle Age a christian defensive enclave but its moment of prosperity and monumental development was after the Reyes Catolicos give the village to Don Andres Cabrera, first marquis of Moya, in 1475. Moya was the head of 36 villages of the maquisate, that later passed to different noble families: the family Villena-Escalona, then the dukedom of Peñaranda and finally the Casa de Alba. Las torcas de los Palancares / las torcas de los Palancares (Cuenca/España) / / Las torcas son unos hundimientos circulares, como socavones, con paredes de enormes cortes de piedra en vertical en cuyo fondo crece la maleza, los pinos y de vez en cuando algunos avellanos. Their geological origin comes the erosion of the underground waters that, along the time, have been attacking the limestone till getting to an external, strong and impermeable layer that has collapsed because of the too little support.

It was elevated with the help of a 800kg Tractel and a pulley on top of the main tower.

Reparando las antenas / la reparacion de las antenas / / 7 de las 8 antiguas antenas M2 5WL pudieron ser reparadas. Fue un largo proceso de limpiarlas, cambiar los elementos rotos, reemplazar el balun y los cables de sujección.
Repairing the antennas / the reparation of the antennas / / 7 of the 8 older M2 5WL antennas could be repaired. It was a long process of cleaning them, changing the broken elements, replacing the balun and support cables. 

Montando las antenas / el montaje de las antenas / / ...y al fin, llegó el momento de empezar a colocar las antenas. Las superiores fueron montadas como se puede ver en la foto y posteriormente el mastil era levantado. De esta manera puede hacer el trabajo solo con la ayuda de una escalera de mano de 5m de altura. Sin embargo, también aprendí que el extremo superior de la escalera debe ser firmemente fijado a su soporte. La lección me costo 12 puntos de sutura en la mano izquierda y el tener que aplazar la finalización del montaje varios meses.
Seting up the antennas / the set up of the antennas / / ..and at last, it was time to start putting the antennas in place. The upper antennas were mounted like you can see in this picture and after the mast was rised. In this way I managed to do the job only with the help of a 5m high ladder. However I also learned that the upper end of the ladder must be firmly tied to its support. Learning that costed me 12 stitches in my left hand and having to put off the set up for several months.. 

..y llego el dia / los preparativos para el izado de las antenas / / Despues de reemplazar el rotor por un potente ProSistel PST71D gracias a la inestimable ayuda de Josep, EA6SA, y de comprobar la SWR de cada antena individualmente, conecté todos los enfasadores y cables de enfase y comprobé de nuevo que todo funcionara correctamente. Asi que, habia llegado finalmente EL DIA de izar el sistema completo y colocarlo en lo alto de la torre. Para este trabajo hacia falta un grupo de personas y algunos amigos se ofrecieron para ayudar. Aqui se pude ver a Rafael, EA6WX (en la torre), Pedro, EA6BB (el de mas a la derecha), Manolo, EA3CBH/6 (Camisa blanca) y Gabriel, EA6VQ (el gordo con shorts azules)
..it was the day / preparing for rising the antenna system / / After replacing the rotator by a huge ProSistel PST71D (Big Boys rotators) with the help of Josep, EA6SA, and checking SWR of each antenna individually I connected all couplers and phasing cables, checked again that everything was working fine. So, it was finally THE DAY of rising the whole system and placing it on top of the tower. This job required the job of a group of people and some good friends offered to help. Here you can see Rafael, EA6WX (on the tower), Pedro, EA6BB (rightmost), Manolo, EA3CBH/6 (white shirt) and myself (fat guy with blue shorts)

Sujetando las antenas / EA6YD y EA6WX sujetando las antenas / / Cuando las antenas estuviero arriba se colocaron en su sitio sobre la plataforma de soporte y fueron fijadas con dos grandes abrazaderas hechas a proposito. Los dos tubos de 25cm soldados a la torre horizontal (como bisagras) descansan sobre dos piezas de nylon a modo de cojinete para permitir el movimiento de elevación. La plataforma de soporte está soldada con unos refuerzos al mastil del rotor, hecho con un tubo de presión (7cm de diametro y 1cm de pared). Sebastián, EA6YD y Rafael, EA6WX, finalizando la tarea de retirar el tramo de torre con la polea, que ya no hacia falta para nada mas.
Securing the antennas / EA6YD and EA6WX securing the antennas / / When antennas were on top they were placed in seat on the supporting platform and fixed to it with two huge clamps. The two 25cm tubes soldered to the horizontal tower (as a hinge) lie on two round pieces of nylon to allow the elevation movement. The supporting platform is soldered to the rotor mast, made with a pressure tube (7cm of diameter, 1cm width wall). Sebastian, EA6YD and Rafael, EA6WX, finishing the job and removing the tower section with the pulley, which was no longer required.

La estructura original barroca ahora forma la parte centra de la facha de la Plaza del Mercado. El ala norte fue añadida entre 1886 y 1890; su segundo piso contiene un gran auditorio Neorenacentista. The town hall of Heidelberg / the town hall of Heidelberg (Germany) / / Originally built in 1701-1703 after the destruction of the town in the Palatinian War of Succession (in 1693), the Town Hall was remodeled and extended several times. The Baroque core structure now forms the central part of the building front on the Market Square. The northern wing was added between 1886 and 1890; its second upstairs floor contains a large Neorenaissance auditorium. Well worth seeing are murals by Wilhelm Lindenschmit and pane-glass windows by Karl Hoffacker featuring themes from the history of the Palatinate. After the Town Hall was da-maged by fire in 1908, a Neobaroque annex was built on the south end, facing the Market Square and the Hauptstrasse.

Ayuntamiento de Lucerna / el Ayuntamiento de Lucerna (Suiza) / el Kapellbrucke / Fue construido entre 1602 y 1606 por Anton Isenmann en estilo Renacentista Italiano y cubierto con un tejado de alero como es tipico en Berna. Los arcos abiertos mirando hacia el Reuss todavia son usados hoy para el mercado semanal. Encima de los arcos esta la sala de Kornschutte, una antigua lugar para el intercambio de mercaderias, que ahora es usada como local para conciertos y exhibiciones.
Luzern's town hall / the tow hall of Luzern (Switzerland) / the Kapellbrucke / It was built between 1602 and 1606 by Anton Isenmann in the Italian Renaissance style and covered with an overhanging roof as is typical for Bern. The open arcades facing the Reuss are still used today as a weekly marketplace. Above the arcades is the Kornschutte hall, an earlier trading goods store, which is now used as a concert and exhibition locale.
