Xiegu G90 review: small radio, real tradeoffs

The short version

The Xiegu G90 is a strong pick for a modest portable HF station. Its built-in tuner and 20-watt output earn their keep, but the small screen takes care to read.

A first HF radio has to do more than fit a budget. It has to leave room for a useful antenna, a power source and some time to learn. That is where the Xiegu G90 makes sense. You get a small radio with a built-in antenna tuner. That saves carrying another box to get on the air.

I would choose it for a portable station that travels by car, or for a first HF setup where space and cost matter. I would think twice if you want a large screen or one-cable computer use. The power limit can also make weak voice contacts harder.

What the Xiegu G90 gets right

The Xiegu G90 HF transceiver provides up to 20 watts of output. It both sends and receives. HF covers the shortwave bands used for long-distance amateur radio, so this is a different tool from the handheld radios in our walkie-talkie guide. It does not replace a VHF or UHF handheld for local repeater chats.

Its appeal is the whole package. You get variable output power and a color spectrum display. The front panel comes off, and an automatic antenna tuner fits inside the small case. None of those features removes the need to learn how a station works. They do make the first setup less crowded.

Think of the Xiegu G90 as the center of a small station, not the complete station. The antenna, feed line and power source still have to suit the job. A desk beside a window and a long walk up a hill also place very different demands on the same radio.

The receive frequency range runs from 0.5 to 30 MHz. Transmission is limited to the supported amateur bands. That broad receive range is useful for shortwave. It does not make the Xiegu G90 a scanner for local VHF police or fire traffic.

The internal automatic antenna tuner earns its place

The internal automatic antenna tuner is the strongest reason to buy the Xiegu G90. An antenna system may present a poor electrical match on a given band. The tuner adjusts that match so the transmitter can work into a more suitable load. You can change bands without carrying a separate manual tuner and turning several knobs.

That is useful with a portable wire antenna, where the final height and shape change from one site to the next. It also helps if your antenna covers more than one band but does not present a low standing-wave ratio, or SWR, on all of them.

There is a limit to what a tuner does. A good match at the Xiegu G90 does not prove that much of your power leaves the antenna as a useful signal. Loss in a poor feed line or a very short antenna can still waste power. The tuner cannot fix a broken connector either.

My approach would be to start with an antenna intended for the bands you use most, then let the tuner handle the remaining mismatch. That gives this HF radio a fair chance. Do not expect the tuner to make any scrap of wire work well. The meter may look fine while few people hear you.

The same distinction matters when choosing and tuning a CB antenna: matching and mounting are parts of the system, not proof of range. CB antennas are made for a different service, so do not assume one is a ready-made multiband HF antenna.

Is the Xiegu G90's 20-watt output enough?

For many portable contacts, yes. For every contact you want to make, no. Distance on HF depends on the band, time of day, noise, antenna and the station at the other end. There is no honest mileage figure for the Xiegu G90 HF radio.

Twenty watts sits between a very low-power portable set and a common 100-watt home radio. Going from 5 to 20 watts is a fourfold rise in power, about 6 decibels. Going from 20 to 100 watts adds about 7 decibels. Those are power ratios, not promises that a contact will travel four or five times farther.

That extra margin can matter when a voice signal is close to the noise. A busy station may hear a 100-watt caller more easily, all else equal. On a quiet band with a good antenna, the Xiegu G90 may already have enough power for the job. More output cannot make a closed band behave like an open one.

I would put antenna placement ahead of an early power upgrade. Move away from local electrical noise when possible. Give a wire antenna room to work. Then choose a band that suits the time and the path. These are useful changes even if you later buy a larger radio.

Owners in this G90 buying discussion praise the tuner and small size, but also point out the small screen and limits of 20 watts. Those reports fit the buying tradeoff. They are not controlled range tests, and I would not turn anyone's longest contact into a normal expectation.

A small color LCD display with a lot to show

The Xiegu G90's 1.8-inch color LCD display shows the operating frequency and a spectrum. Its waterfall display adds a short signal history. The spectrum shows where signals sit across a slice of the band. A brief signal leaves a trace in the waterfall display after it stops.

That view helps you find activity without turning the tuning dial across every quiet patch. It is less useful if you cannot read the small labels comfortably. Screen size matters. Think about reading glasses and where the radio will sit. Small text is harder to read well below eye level.

Before buying, look at a clear front-panel photo at roughly the radio's actual size. A full-screen product photo on a laptop can make the display look much larger than it is. A simple angled stand may make desk use easier, but it will not enlarge the text.

The detachable display unit

The Xiegu G90 has a detachable display unit. You can take the control head off the main body. That lets you place the controls where you can see them while putting the larger section elsewhere. The supplied cable makes this remote head useful for a fixed setup with limited space.

I would use that feature to solve a placement problem, rather than detach the head on every outing by default. More loose parts and cables mean more to pack and check. The detachable display design helps with placement, but leave air space around the main body.

Xiegu G90 HF modes and receiver controls

Single sideband, or SSB, is the main voice mode many buyers will use on HF. CW is Morse code. The Xiegu G90 supports both, along with AM and the modes listed for the installed firmware. Current documentation also includes narrow FM. Older reviews can describe a different software version.

The Xiegu G90's receive filters let you narrow the slice of sound you hear. A narrow filter can help separate a CW signal from nearby traffic. For voice, making the filter too narrow can make speech harder to understand. The useful setting is the one that keeps the voice clear while reducing unwanted sound.

The control buttons and multi-function mic save space. You need to learn short presses, long presses and menu choices. That is a fair trade in a small portable radio. It can become tiresome if you expect a separate knob for each task.

I would learn band selection, output power, tuning, filter width and split operation at home. Split means you listen on one frequency and send on another. It is much easier to practise with the manual nearby than to puzzle over the controls during a brief opening on a crowded band.

Learning the receiver controls

RF gain controls how much the receiver amplifies incoming radio signals. More gain is not always more readable sound. In a noisy place, try the gain and filter settings before deciding that the antenna or radio's performance is poor.

The Xiegu G90 also has a CW decoder. In CW mode it can turn received Morse into text, but tuning, noise and the other station's sending all affect the result. Fine tuning matters. I would use the decoder as a learning aid, with my ears checking what the screen suggests.

Listen through the internal speaker first, then try headphones if background noise hides quiet details. Turn the volume down before connecting headphones. Better audio quality for your ears can make a session less tiring without changing the signal at the antenna.

Connecting the Xiegu G90 for digital modes

The Xiegu G90 HF transceiver can work with a computer for modes such as FT8. But its USB programming cable is not a USB sound card. This is an easy detail to miss when adding up the cost of a first station.

There are two separate jobs, with separate connectors. CAT control lets the computer read or change the radio's frequency and other settings. An audio connection carries the tones used to send and receive data. A working CAT connection does not prove that the audio path is working.

Use a compatible audio interface and the correct cable arrangement for the radio and computer. Radioddity's G90 CAT and digital-mode guide shows the separate paths. Follow the instructions for your interface as well, since cable layouts vary.

Set computer sound levels with care. More volume is not a shortcut to a better signal. Excess audio can distort a transmission. Keep system alerts away from the radio's audio device so a notification does not become part of what you send.

If easy PC connection is your main reason to buy, price the complete connection before choosing the Xiegu G90. A radio that costs more but includes a direct USB audio interface may narrow the gap. The Xiegu G90 still makes sense when its tuner, size and output match your other needs.

Power and cooling for portable use

The Xiegu G90 has no internal battery. At home you need a suitable regulated DC supply. In the field you need a compatible external battery and correctly fused leads. The manual lists a 10.5 to 16.5-volt supply range. It can draw up to 6 amps when you transmit.

A battery's amp-hour label alone does not tell you how long a session will last. Time spent transmitting, output power, screen use and battery condition all matter. Leave some reserve instead of planning around the best possible runtime.

Check connector type and polarity before connecting power. The current G90 manual describes a 2024 hardware change that added Anderson Powerpole power connections and changed the case ventilation. An older used unit can look different from a new one while still being sold as a G90.

Keep the radio out of direct sun and give it airflow. Transmitting for extended periods asks more of cooling than a short voice exchange with pauses. Do not bury an operating radio under a coat or in a closed bag just because the front panel is elsewhere.

The listed operating temperature range is 0 to 50 degrees Celsius, or 32 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. That is an ambient limit, not a promise that the Xiegu G90 can transmit at full power for hours in hot sun. A field operator should plan shade, airflow and breaks.

For a used radio, ask for clear photos of the rear power connector and the case. Confirm that the tuner, screen, microphone and both sections of the radio work. Ask for the radio's control head firmware version and its main body operating firmware version. Do not assume that a successful power-on proves the transmitter and tuner are sound.

A Xiegu G90 firmware update needs instructions that match the hardware and release. The control head and main body are separate parts of that process. Use the correct firmware update port for each. Read the release notes before changing either, keep a stable power source connected and avoid interrupting the update.

My verdict on the Xiegu G90

I would buy the Xiegu G90 for a small HF station where the antenna tuner will see regular use. It leaves room in the budget for the parts that make a station work, and 20 watts is a useful level for portable operation.

I would pass if small text is a problem or I wanted a tidy one-cable digital setup. I would also think twice if I mostly wanted weak voice contacts from a noisy home. Buy it for the station you want to build. Its value is clear when its limits fit that plan.
